Description
  • This book, originally published near the start of the twentieth century, was written with two aims in mind. In the first place, the authors attempted to place before the general public in simple language a true statement of the then-present position of biological science. In the second place, they endeavoured to furnish the scientific men of the day with food for reflection.
  • This is an excellent reprint of the original book found in the Cornell University Library. It was first published in 1909 by Turnbull & Spears of Edinburgh. Many of the arguments against Darwinism in the 1909 book are still at issue today, even the mutation theory of the origin of genetic variation is refuted! The illustrations are not as good as in the original, but the text is as good or better than the original. The publisher photocopied the original pages, thus it is as closet the original as possible, and was not re-typeset. Douglas Dewar (1875–1957) was trained as a lawyer and studied natural science at Cambridge University. The authors specialized in birds, Dewar wrote mostly on the topic of ornithology and wrote numerous books on the birds of India, He was taught evolution and in his early works on ornithology he accepted adaptation by natural selection, but his study of birds in the wild forced him to become a creationist, an area he was active in for most the rest of his life. He wrote over 22 books, most of the original copies are sought after by creationists and others, thus now go for very high prices, requiring reprints, as this one, to make them affordable. His work was highly respected in his day when the opposition against those who voiced problems with Darwinism was not as strong as it is today. Very readable and in many ways an excellent refutation of Darwinism by a respected researcher.
